Notes before we continue:Although every effort to stay true to 'minus the theory' will be made throughout this course, there are some terms that need to be used in order for us to communicate! For the most part these will be terms you already know or at least have heard many times. This is a class participation course. You are the class and your participation will be singing the notes in a major scale. For the purposes of this course it will be necessary to sing it using numbers 1 through 7 instead of do re mi or la la la. Additionally, you will be asked to draw and point and sing. You are a smart person and you may figure that you don't need to bother with all that as long as you 'get' the concept. You will get more out of it if you do the drawing and touching and singing, whether or not the difference is immediately perceptible. Mindful that music theory is "a means to understand the language of music; a way to describe and explain music and how it's constructed", understanding the language of music without it will only take us so far. This course is not meant to replace learning music theory or serve as a primer leading to learning theory or to suggest that learning the theory is not worth your time. It is meant to illustrate that our system of music notation is so sophisticated and versatile that there is plenty of info that singers can understand and use minus the theory. |
