Clefs

Simply put, clefs give us a point of reference that determines which notes are on which lines and spaces.

is a treble clef.

We could mention that 'treble' means 'high' and that this clef is usually used for music written for high-sounding instruments and female vocalists or that it is also called the 'G clef', but that would be theory and we're minus the theory! So suffice it to say that the soprano and alto parts almost always have a treble clef at the beginning of the staff.

is a bass clef.

The tenor and bass parts almost always have a bass clef at the beginning of the staff - although tenors learn to be flexible.

We could mention that bass means 'low' or that this clef is also called the 'F' clef, but … no theory!.
