minor seven, flat fiveThe m7(♭5) symbol prescribes a chord spelled 1 ♭3 ♭5 ♭7 Dm7(♭5) for example, is spelled: D F A♭ C The m7(♭5) chord is sometimes also called a half-diminished seven chord. Note that the root, third and fifth of the chord make up a diminished triad. The seventh - in this example, C, was once major and now is minor. So everything is diminsihed except the seventh - the chord is not yet completely diminished. If we reduce the seventh by yet another half-step then we have a diminished seven chord, spelled: D F A♭ C♭. All the intervals in a 𝇈7 (diminished seven chord) are minor thirds. A m7(♭5) or ø7 (half-diminished seven chord) has one interval of a Major Third, between the fifth and seventh. |
