Major Chord / Triad:
Root, Third and Fifth degrees of a Major Scale played simultaneously.

When playing a major chord, the middle note is called the third of the chord because relative to the root of the chord (one) it is the third note in the scale.

Likewise, the top note of the triad is called the fifth of the chord because relative to the root of the chord (one) it is the fifth note in the scale.
